I realize I've been neglecting my poor blog readers. So here's a little something to apologize, and hopefully make you laugh.
When I ask a customer for their routing and account number and they ask me “which one do you want first?,” my impulse is to say, “It really makes no difference as long as you tell me which is which.” My second impulse is to say, “Sir, I’m glad you asked. Now listen closely, we don’t have much time. I can only tell you once, and the security of the nation depends entirely on you following my instruction down to the T. I need you to read me your routing number first, separating each three digit grouping with an eighth of a second pause. Then you must wait for my next command. I will say “and the account number,” at which point you must read me your account number backwards and in Spanish, lest the world be blown to smithereens.” And my third impulse is to say “The routing number appears first on your check, and it’s the first one I listed when I said ‘routing and account number’, but let’s get creative and you give me your check number instead.” But generally, I just settle on saying “The routing number, sir.”
Undoubtedly, however, no matter what I answer, the response is, “I’ve got this Customer Number, will that work?”
